Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF)

The most characteristic signs  are: 

  • Fever attacks of short duration, a few hours to 3 or 4 days maximum,
  • severe stomach pain,
  • chest pain,
  • pain in the legs (often also present on exertion) and Joints (especially ankles and knees) that can sometimes be swollen.
  • A large red plaque (called pseudo erysipelas) is sometimes seen around the ankle or knee.

The patients are almost always of Mediterranean origin: North Africa (Arabs of the Levant, Sephardic), Turkey, Armenia.
